Privacy

Last updated 7 October 2026. Plain-language version, to be reviewed by a Botswana lawyer.

Maranyane is run by Aobakwe Mothabi in Gaborone, Botswana. This page explains what we collect, why, and how to have it removed. We follow Botswana's Data Protection Act.

What we collect

  • Your post: the title, description, price, town, neighbourhood and photos you add. Photos are shrunk, and the hidden location data phones put in them is removed before saving.
  • Your contact details: the name and WhatsApp or phone number (or email) you choose to put on a post.
  • Your email, if you give it: for your manage link, expiry reminders and, if you have an account, logging in and password resets.
  • Account details, if you make an account: your nickname, email and a scrambled (hashed) version of your password. We never see your actual password.
  • Payment references: if you pay for a boost, the amount, method and transaction reference you type in, kept as a record of the sale.
  • Technical details: your internet (IP) address, used briefly to stop spam and abuse (and saved with any report you file, so we can spot fake reports), and a cookie that remembers your town and your posts on that phone. No advertising or tracking cookies.

Who can see what

  • Your post and the name on it are public (unless you post anonymously).
  • Your phone number is not printed on the page. It's only revealed to someone who taps the contact button on your post.
  • Your email is never shown publicly and never sold or shared for marketing.
  • Your forum nickname and posts are public.

Where it's stored

The website and database run on a server in the United States (InterServer). Photos and daily backups are stored with Cloudflare, and emails are sent through Resend. These providers only process your data for us, and we choose them for their security.

How long we keep it

  • Posts stay up until they expire (usually 30 days, 14 for jobs and housing) or you remove them.
  • Database backups are kept for 14 days, then deleted.
  • Drafts we prepare from public posts you made elsewhere are deleted after 30 days if you don't publish them, or immediately if you tap "No thanks".
  • Payment records are kept as long as needed for accounting.

Your rights, and how to delete your data

  • Remove a post: open its manage link (or My posts) and tap Remove.
  • Delete your account: log in and go to Delete my account. Your listings are removed and your email and nickname are wiped.
  • Anything else (a copy of your data, a correction, removal of something you can't remove yourself): contact us and we'll respond within 30 days.
